versailles. the palace was closed (oops…) but we biked through the gardens, which never seemed to end.

a visit to the pompidou centre, which houses the musée national d’art moderne, the biggest modern art museum in europe. the building is a piece of art itself. it was designed to look like it has been flipped inside out. the plumbing, electricity ducts, elevator machinery, etc. are all on the outside of the building, as is the building skeleton. some of the art made little sense…

visiting le marais, the jewish quarter was one of the highlights of the trip. most of these pictures are from rue des rosiers, the area’s main street. unlike a lot of european jewish neighborhoods today (like the one i wrote about in cordoba), le marais is still an active center of jewish life and full of mostly orthodox families. the streets are lined with kosher restaurants, delis and bakeries, and there is at least one jewish religious school. l’as du fallafel, where we had lunch, has what’s been called the best falafel in Europe. i also visited the main synagogue (built in 1913), agudat kehilot, on rue Pavée. the rabbi had just finished closing up when i got there, but reopened the synagogue so i could spend a few minutes inside. he closed the door behind me and told me, in hebrew (our only common language) to “pray from my heart”.

Paris!
A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get a visit from one of my best friends, Cyana, who is studying in Morocco (where I spent this past weekend, but we’ll get to that…). After a couple days in Madrid, we flew to Paris to spend the weekend. Paris had always been high on my travel to-do list, and it didn’t disappoint. It was probably the most beautiful, and definitely the most expensive, city I’ve visited. We packed a ton of sightseeing into the 4 days we were there: the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe (right next to our hotel), the Pompidou Center, Notre Dame, teh Jewish and Latin Quarters, the Eiffel Tower (twice!), and many more. We woke up extra early on Saturday to watch the sunrise from the steps of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. We also took a train from Paris to see Versailles on Monday, not realizing that it was closed for tours that day! We made the best of it, renting bikes to explore the absolutely enormous gardens. And as you would expect from two International Relations majors, we ate, in the span of 4 days: French, Italian, Thai, Chinese, Israeli, Lebanese and American cuisine. The trip wouldn’t have been complete without a mad dash to the airport through unreal traffic (this from an LA driver), which took us to pretty much every freeway in Paris and sucked out what little energy we had left after a full weekend of running through the City of Light. Every Thursday night, rain or shine, a group of elderly Spaniards gathers in Puerta del Sol in a demonstration to remember victims of the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain for 40 years. Their primary objective is to raise awareness and recall the memory of the many innocent people who were killed or kidnapped during Franco’s reign.

El 15-M: un movimiento eficaz
This is a essay I recently wrote for my Spanish composition class. Our assignment was to make a persuasive argument. I argue that 15-M is an effective movement, despite the perception that it has not achieved much here in Spain. Enjoy!
El 15-M: un movimiento eficaz
Mucho se ha dicho y escrito en los últimos días sobre el movimiento del 15-M, en gran parte debido a las protestas globales del 15 de octubre que fueron una continuación de este movimiento. Un análisis de la historia y los objetivos del 15-M, así como sus logros, muestra que es en realidad un movimiento eficaz.
Es importante tener en cuenta que el 15-M no es una organización fija. No tiene líderes u oficinas, y la meta del movimiento es diferente dependiendo de quién se pregunte. Pero es seguro decir que el objetivo general del 15-M es provocar un cambio en los sistemas sociales y políticos que parecen corruptos y opresivos. Dados estos objetivos, ¿sería correcto decir que el 15-M ha sido un éxito?
El signo más claro de éxito es el hecho de que el 15-M se ha convertido en un fenómeno omnipresente en España y que también se ha extendido al resto del mundo. Aunque algunos dan crédito a la Primavera Árabe por iniciar los movimientos en todo el mundo por la justicia social, lo que tuvo lugar en España en mayo mostró al mundo que lo que pasó en el mundo árabe también es posible en una democracia del primer mundo. Hace menos de dos semanas, el movimiento 15-M se convirtió en 15-O, y casi mil ciudades alrededor del mundo realizaron manifestaciones similares a las que se produjeron en España.
El Congreso de España se ha disuelto antes de las elecciones anticipadas que se celebrarán el 20 de noviembre, y gran parte del discurso político visible en los periódicos y la televisión tiene que ver con el contraste entre las exigencias de los “indignados” y las promesas de los políticos. A pesar de sus intentos de evitar el tema, los principales políticos de ambos partidos se han visto obligados a expresar su opinión sobre el 15-M. Estas opiniones han sido muy variadas para complacer a sus seguidores. El ex primer ministro José María Aznar, dijo que el movimiento del 15-M “no es más que un movimiento marginal antisistema, vinculado a grupos de extrema izquierda; su representatividad no es importante en la vida española”. Por otro lado, el Primer Ministro socialista, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, dijo, “son manifestaciones, protestas y demandas realizadas al amparo de derechos democráticos. Forman parte de la fisiología y no de la patología de nuestro modelo de convivencia y reivindican en el fondo el valor de la política”. Aunque estas opiniones son radicalmente diferentes, muestran que al menos el 15-M ha ganado la atención de los líderes en la parte superior de la jerarquía política española.
Por lo tanto, vemos que en muchos sentidos el movimiento ha tenido éxito. Sin embargo, otros dicen que en realidad, los indignados no han logrado cambios concretos, y por tanto, el movimiento no ha sido eficaz. Estas personas probablemente dirían que aún con todas las manifestaciones y las asambleas de barrio, el verdadero poder político en España se mantendrá en manos de los políticos que han visto el movimiento 15-M con sospecha e ira. Ellos argumentan que no se han realizado cambios, que el capitalismo y el sistema financiero persisten, y que los recortes a programas sociales no han parado.
Aún así, una mirada justa a los hechos y la evolución del movimiento muestra que, en general, el 15-M ha sido un éxito. Ha logrado su meta de crear conciencia sobre las injusticias sociales y se ha aplicado presión a los sistemas políticos y económicos vigentes que critica. Aunque por el momento las cosas pueden seguir siendo lo mismo, los sentimientos generados por el 15-M no han desaparecido, y seguramente seguirá desempeñando un papel importante en el futuro de la sociedad española
